The MPA Gold is an affordable way to get some analog tube "warmth" into your signal chain. You can either stick with the tubes that it comes with or you can replace them with some "NOS" vacuum tubes to take the sound to the next level.
It works both as a preamp for condenser microphones (I use it to amp my Shure KSM44 condenser mic) and as a direct in box for guitars and synthesizers. My bass guitar sounds so much better when I run it through this thing.
One really great thing about the MPA Gold (besides it's high quality for a low price) is that it has two different inputs. This is a great way to try out two different vacuum tubes (to get some different "sound colors" in your recordings.) Or of course you can use it as two inputs at the same time (ie one for vocals and a second for a bass guitar.)
